So Starbucks opened it’s first fancy outlet in India in October 2012, 41 years after it’s launch in Seattle. With a cool 84 stores in India now and a net sales of Rs 235 crore in 2016, Indians have whole-heartedly accepted this global brand. But a US-based consumer firm’s research on cost of a small hot latte at Starbucks in 44 countries around the world puts India in top five most expensive locations. To put this into perspective, in Starbucks one tall cappuccino costs Rs 180 +tax and that same amount can buy
- 1 Mc Chicken Meal in Mc Donalds
- 10 idlis
- 6 packets of bread
- 6 pcs Washington Apples
You get the point, Starbucks isn’t your typical coffee shop where you won’t lighten your wallet significantly! So if you like to haunt Starbucks ever so often, it’s going to cost you a lot of moolah but if you can’t stop loving their coffee, here are some ways you can make the best of your money.
1.Buy in Bulk
If you’re going to be sitting at Starbucks for a long time, it makes more sense to order a French press of coffee than a individual drinks every few hours.
You’ll get a discount of Rs 10 on your drink when you bring in your own reusable cup, mug, or travel tumbler. It may not seem like a lot but keep if mind that if you visit Starbucks twice every week, you will save Rs 20 every week which effectively is Rs 1200 every year.
You don’t have to reach for the higher-end bottled water in Starbucks when thirsty as they will fill up a glass of water from their tap whenever you ask! Do not worry about the safety of their water as their ice and water used in Starbucks is triple-filtered.
If you sign up for the Starbucks reward program , you’re entitled to a free drink when your birthday comes around. Keep in mind that you’ll have to redeem it in the 30 days after your birthday.
5. Be your own barista
If you prefer the taste of the Starbucks coffee, just purchase their beans and brewing equipment at Starbucks stores or even online. In fact you can ask them to grind the beans to whichever consistency you prefer for no charge!
6. Big is Better
If you’re visiting their store with somebody, it would make more sense to one drink of their largest size (Venti) instead of 2 separate drinks. For example, a Venti Coffee Frappuccino costs Rs 215 while 2 Tall Coffee Frappuccinos will cost you Rs 320 which is a cool difference of Rs 105! Swallow your embarrassment and ask the barista for an extra cup to share the cup of deliciousness.
If you’ve spilt or dropped your take-away coffee, do not hesitate to go back and ask for a refill. Starbucks is known for it’s personalized customer service and as such will not deny you your cuppa. However do not try to con them by using this excuse.
8. Taste Test
If you aren’t sure of a brew or drink, ask for a sample. If the store isn’t busy, they will happy to let you try something before buying.
9. Leave out the Ice
Most iced drinks are half the drink, half ice. Ask for your tea without ice. Bigger bang for your buck!
10. Short Stuff
There’s an even smaller size than “tall,” and it’s called “short.” The “short” cappuccino, will have the same amount of espresso as the as its “tall” version, says Slate.
